Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) Certification Training

Options

EPIC offers three options for FCE certification training:

Training Information

Each training option covers the same material and includes.

  • EPIC Lift Capacity manual and all necessary forms for protocol administration
  • Cal-FCP manual and all necessary forms for protocol administration
  • ToolKit 2004
  • EPIC Lift Capacity Certification upon satisfying following requirements:
    1. Passing grade on a written examination
    2. Completion of an application with confirmation of educational background
    3. Submission of five test-retest case examples with healthy subjects at a site-licensed facility

Training provides:

  • Basic certification training for the EPIC Lift Capacity test.
  • Hands-on introduction to the Cal-FCP, including demonstration of the tests and interpretation of test results.

Cost

The ELC Certification Kit includes a serial number for one evaluator candidate and costs $350.

The workshops at our facilities are $450 per person.

EPIC will customize training to your facility’s needs if you have six or more people to be certified. Trainers will arrange a mutually acceptable date for the training. In addition to the training cost of $450 per person, you will need to cover the trainer’s travel expenses and one-night hotel accomodation. We have trainers that are in close proximity to most facilities in the United States. Please e-mail EPIC for more information or to arrange a customized training.

NOTE: Because of the technical nature of the material, it is difficult to learn the process without formal training. For this reason, two persons from the same facility are encouraged to attend so that services are not suspended when one certified staff person is not available. Additionally, although it is normal to schedule one client on the Cal-FCP every two hours, with two people who are trained, one client per hour scheduling is quite feasible.

Equipment Information and Suppliers

  • Equipment for administration of the Cal-FCP costs approximately $6,000 (many clinics already have most of the equipment in place).
  • The EPIC Lift Capacity process is patent-protected.
  • Equipment list
  • EPIC Lift Capacity test authorized equipment suppliers:
    1. BTE Technologies
    2. RMA

Do not build this equipment yourself or buy it from an unauthorized supplier; we do not support or authorize other suppliers or home-built equipment. The unauthorized builder is assuming a great risk for product liability. We impose these controls strictly in order to protect the public who relies on these protocols and the professionals who make the commitment to provide FCE services with integrity.

Background

Occupational disability is the effect of medical impairment on the individual’s ability to function in work-relevant tasks. Until recently there has been no standardized method to quantify occupational disability, to provide a “percent disability rating.” Additionally, the matching of the impaired person’s residual functional capacity to a job’s demands has been both expensive and time consuming. Now, two of the most highly respected figures in occupational rehabilitation, Leonard Matheson, PhD, and Vert Mooney, MD, have pooled their talents to provide reasonable solutions to these problems. This workshop presents their methods and procedures, the Functional Capacity Protocols.

In 1993, Dr. Mooney and Dr. Matheson undertook a project for the State of California Division of Industrial Accidents Workers’ Compensation Board to develop a standardized method to quantify occupational disability. This project resulted in the California Functional Capacity Protocol (Cal-FCPTM), a brief and highly structured method to derive a percent disability rating for a person with soft-tissue musculoskeletal impairment. Because it is inexpensive and brief, the Cal-FCP often is administered serially to guide managed care treatment programs for rehabilitation from painful soft-tissue injuries.
