Why Value Development Coaching?

Value Development Coaching (VDC) is the intentional development of resources selected to achieve goals that define a career encompassing the full breadth of the client’s life. The focus of VDC is to establish and maintain optimal quality of life across the lifespan, to help the client flourish.

Why is this important?

Because we usually develop personal resources too narrowly, focused on a job or on an occupation. This is unnecessary because people have much greater capacity, and can entertain development across a broad spectrum of interests and abilities. This job focus is also short-sighted because, when the foundation supporting quality of life is narrow, it is precarious and easily lost by unplanned tragedies.

Since 1970, Leonard N. Matheson, PhD has helped many thousands of people to re-establish quality of life after unplanned tragedies such as illness or injury or divorce or the loss of access to an established occupation. Integrating practice and research, he has refined the strategies and techniques of Value Development Coaching so that they can be applied by occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, vocational evaluators, and counselors in a wide variety of settings.

Over the past twenty years, Dr. Matheson has successfully provided VDC services to professionals, business executives, public officials, clergy, university faculty, college students, and second careerists. Expanding beyond the typical clinical practice of a psychologist, Dr. Matheson has integrated key aspects of Positive Psychology into a method of practice that focuses on strengths and competencies. Based on Dr. Matheson’s occupational competence model of human development within the context of family and community, VDC expands career to encompass the client’s full life space, which facilitates the global development of the person and helps the person to flourish.

What is Advanced Techniques of Value Development Coaching?

Advanced VDC is a six-month growth and certification process anchored by three consecutive days in a small-group seminar experience with Dr. Matheson at his offices in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Beginning with an extensive telephone interview and personality testing, you will work with Len to design your own VDC experience. Pre-work will be assigned before meeting with Len and no more than five others on similar VDC journeys. Three days of intensive didactic training, enhanced by small group exercises, individual study and reflection, progress testing, and one-on-one coaching with Len will set the stage for six months of post-work, nurtured by monthly teleconferences as well as assigned readings and audio recordings.

As you experience the efficacy of VDC in your life, you will learn how to provide many of these services to your clients, and how to tweak your current services to make them more effective. Help others achieve their full potential by beginning with yourself.

Why should I expand beyond my current professional boundaries?

Is rehabilitation all there is for rehabilitation professionals to do? Isn’t it true that rehabilitation professionals who are skilled at assisting persons with disability to have excellent quality of life in spite of unexpected losses and setbacks can use those skills to provide services to people whose limitations are minimal and mostly self-imposed? Do you have an interest in expanding your practice to provide VDC services? If not, only the personal growth aspects of this experience will be of use, and perhaps you should consider not participating, but talking with Len about a separate personal growth VDC experience.

Advanced Techniques of Value Development Coaching is an advanced training experience, open only to those who are fully credentialed health services providers who practice independently (without supervision) in their state or province, and who have had at least 5 years of full-time practice.

The Advanced VDC seminar occurs twice in 2008, April 16–18, and October 8–10 in Chesterfield, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Participation is limited to six persons in each seminar. On successful completion of the experience, each participant will be certified by EpicRehab, LLC as a VDC Coach. The cost of the six-month experience, including all materials, the seminar, and all coaching sessions is $2,000 per person.
